If you’ve spent some time browsing Whole Intentions or reading our story, you’ll quickly learn that Travis and I have dealt with a health issue called candida.
To put it very simply, candida is a yeast-like organism everyone has in their body. It’s generally harmless unless your immune system becomes weakened by things like antibiotics and foods high in sugars and starches. These things feed candida until it overruns your system, causing severe health issues. Candida isn’t something you can ‘get rid’ of, because, as I mentioned, everyone has it in their systems. Instead, you want to maintain it, or keep it ‘under control’.
One of the many ways to control candida overgrowth is with an anti-candida diet.
Now I’ll be the first to admit that a candida diet isn’t easy. Your first thought is usually along the lines of – “What. Am. I. Going. To. Eat?!” In the beginning I wasn’t all that enthusiastic about eating this way, cooking this way, or try to create candida-diet recipes. In fact, on more than one occasion I tried to convince Travis that it wasn’t worth it and that we should look for other alternatives. 🙂
I’m so glad he convinced me to stick it out – I’ll happily admit now that it is sooo worth it. Travis, who had many more symptoms than me, noticed a big change after several months. I remember him coming home and saying he felt as if he’d made a break through. From that point on, his ‘bad’ days became fewer and fewer. Now instead of a week of bad days and maybe one good day, he has weeks of good days and one bad day.
While this diet certainly takes some getting used to, let me assure you that there are plenty of delicious candida-diet recipes out there you can enjoy – and you can enjoy them knowing that every bite is bringing you that much closer to healing.
This is one of the recipes we relied on while on the full candida diet and is still a family favorite. It’s quick and easy, dirties only one pan, and contains only three ingredients. How can you go wrong?
Hamburger Cabbage Casserole
This is one of the recipes we relied on while on the full candida diet and is still a family favorite. It’s quick and easy, dirties only one pan, and contains only three ingredients. How can you go wrong?
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 head red or green cabbage
- 14 ounces diced tomatoes (with juices)
- Brown ground beef in skillet.
-
Add tomatoes and all the juices.
-
Wash cabbage and cut lengthwise. Then, give it half a turn and chop lengthwise again so you’re cutting them into ‘squares’.
-
Add the cabbage to the skillet and then cover with a lid and let simmer on low for about 25-30 min. until cabbage is tender yet still a tad crunchy.
You can add onions, green peppers, or whatever vegetable you’d like to it. We regularly add Homemade Sausage Seasoning to give it a different twist too. This is the basic recipe – play with it and knock yourself out! 🙂
This is very similar to what my husband and I eat – we make it in a huge stock pot. It’s called “meat slop” in our house, lol! We got the recipe here: http://www.silverhydra.com/2011/10/meat-slop/
So easy! I’ll be giving this a try; I think I’ll add some onions.
I love red cabbage and use it a lot in cooking. I mix whatever I have at home, I always add garlic, onion and grated carrots. I add lots of spices too.
Yum!! I will be trying this for sure this weekend. We saute ground turkey with beets, carrots, and kale-maybe you would like that too. Great suggestion-thanks for the post

This looks great!! I’ll be trying this one out real soon. 🙂
We eat a lot of cabbage, but I usually end up going with either soup or stir fry. This looks good for something different.
I’m going to have to try this one. Thanks for posting it.

Super simple – yea! By the way, Bionaturae doesn’t have BPA in their cans anymore :-).
Hurray!
Simple and very tasty. I added 1 medium chopped onion, 3 cloves minced garlic, canned tomatoes with basil, 1-2 tsp. italian seasoning, salt & pepper. Delicious!
