Now that you know there are great benefits to having essential oils in your home, how do you go about getting them?
If you’re like me, you want to make sure that you’re getting the best for you and your family, right?! So you think, “oh I have seen some essential oils in the health food section of the grocery store, I’ll go there!” STOP! There are a few things you should ask yourself about an essential oil before buying and using on your precious family.
First and foremost, look at a bottle of oil that you should be able to use internally – like lemon or grapefruit. You don’t want it to say, “For external use only, do not injest.” If you can not injest something that you should normally be able to. . .what have they added (that may or may not be on the label)?
Second, essential oils should not expire and no expiration date is required in the US. Pure essential oils do not contain water and can not grow mold, mildew and yeast.
Third, where do they grow their plants, do they have control over the quality of soil and specific requirements when harvesting and distilling? I saw a video of an essential oil company distilling their oil and then scooping the oil off a dirty pond, YIKES!
There’s great debate about which oils are the best so it is good to do some research before you get started.
Why I choose Young Living Oils?
Young Living is my essential oil company of choice. Young Living is a full disclosure company, which means that EVERYTHING that is in a product, even if it is below what is required to put on the label, is on the label. Their essential oils do NOT have an expiration date.
You can also visit and work on the Young Living farms where they grow and harvest the plants (this is my favorite part). I was thoroughly impressed when I visited the office, warehouse and farm that Young Living has in Utah. This is just one of their many farms around the world. They were extremely clean and well organized.
I was raised on a farm, so this was of particular interest to me. I loved hearing about how they care for the soil and the plants organically. Something else I appreciate about this company is the research that the founder, Gary Young, does in order that we get the best quality oils. I remember him telling us about the ylang ylang flower that grows in Equador. The flower has to be picked by hand and during the night and early morning hours to get the ripe flowers that produce the best oil. Also, palo santo, which is a tree from Ecuador, has to be dead for at least two years before the wood will release the oil while being distilled! Now I thought, how in the world does someone figure all of that out…AMAZING!
Young Living, of course does all kinds of testing on the oils as they’re distilled and come in. However, they also have third-party facilities that also test the oils to make sure they meet the utmost specifications.
How can you learn about this amazing process? Young Living has a guarantee they call Seed to Seal. This is a promise that we get products that are genuine, free of synthetic chemicals and of unmatched purity. There are 5 steps to it. Seed, Cultivate, Distill, Test, and Seal. So basically from the time it is a seed until it gets bottled, the greatest care, and I mean greatest care, is given to these plants and oils. You can learn more at seedtoseal.com.
The most common essential oil starter kit with Young Living is the Premium Starter Kit. In this kit you will receive 11 bottles of essential oils AND a diffuser AND some travel packs!!! The oils you receive are lemon, peppermint, melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree), frankincense, lavender, Thieves, Purification, Joy, Stress Away, PanAway and Citrus Fresh.
