Have you ever said, “I wish I would have known then what I know now.” I think we all have. I say this now about knowing how vital it is to take care of our digestive system. I had to learn the hard way!
The real hard way because it was with my youngest child.
At 2 months of age, my son started with a small rash behind his ears and in his belly button. By the time he was 6 months it was also behind his knees and on his hands. He was miserable and itchy. Long story short, no one around me (even the doctors) seemed to know why this was happening.
I really felt that as his mother, my job was to find out what was CAUSING this horrible issue. I attended a class not related to skin issues, but the chiropractor there mentioned that more times than not ANY skin issues are gut-related.
Let me tell you it was like a light bulb went off in my head! This started the long process of research and label reading at the grocery store! I tell you all of this so that you can be aware of how important supporting this body system is! Today I would like to show you what Young Living has to offer in supporting the digestive system.
Essential oils for the digestive system
Digestion is important for breaking down food into nutrients, which the body uses for energy, growth, and cell repair.
I would say the number one essential oil for digestive support is peppermint oil. Even restaurants pass out mints after you eat! My preferred way to use peppermint is to drink it in my water. But be careful, 1 drop of peppermint is equivalent to 26 cups of peppermint tea!! You can also dilute it and apply over your stomach.
Other oils include ginger, fennel, lemon, spearmint, and nutmeg. It just depends on what your body likes! There are a couple of blends that we use because they have a good variety of these single oils in them: Di-Gize and AromaEase.
Di-Gize has tarragon, ginger, peppermint, juniper, fennel, lemongrass, anise, and patchouli. Some people like to add this to water for a stimulating beverage, me on the other hand, I take it in a gel capsule. 😉
AromaEase has peppermint, spearmint, ginger, cardamom, and fennel. Personally I like the smell of this one better as it has a lovely spearmint smell to it! It definitely has a clean and nurturing scent!
One more for kids is the KidScents Tummygize, this one comes prediluted and also contains spearmint and peppermint!
Enzymes and probiotics
We also have enzymes that you can take with your meals. They are called Essentialzyme and Essentialzymes-4. Both of these are formulated to aid in digestion and also include essential oils!!
Last, but definitely not least, is a probiotic! I can not tell you how important it is to maintain healthy gut flora and taking a probiotic is key to this! Young Living has one called Life 5. With five different probiotic strains, this is a great product to use every day. I like to take it at night before bed on an empty stomach. Also, it is safe for children (I even add it to my diaper cream.)
There are many more products and this can be overwhelming! I remember hours of research and grocery shopping in the middle of the night with no kids just so I could concentrate. Just take one step at a time! Essential oils and products containing them are just one piece of the puzzle in maintaining a healthy digestive system. I hope that this helps you on your journey to staying healthy.
